South London Waste Partnership won

5 March 2008

Four south London boroughs have jointly awarded a £120 million recycling-led waste management contract to Viridor Waste Management to help them boost recycling and send less waste to landfill.  Work starts on 1 September, 2008.

The South London Waste Partnership, a voluntary consortium consisting of the London Boroughs of Kingston upon Thames, Croydon, Merton and Sutton, has chosen Viridor to handle the transfer, transport and disposal of up to 450,000 tonnes of household recyclables and waste every year for the next 14 years.

"We are delighted, not least because it shows how councils can work effectively in partnership and with the private sector for the benefit of the communities we all serve," said Graham Warren, Viridor's regional director for the south east.

Current South London Waste Partnership's chairman, Councillor Derek Osbourne added: "This initiative restates the commitment of all four boroughs to meeting and exceeding the EU targets for reducing reliance on landfill and to achieving high levels of recycling.

"In working with Viridor we are complementing each borough's recycling programmes and helping a large swathe of south London to achieve its recycling objectives.  Ensuring that the recyclables collected are separated for recycling and informing local people about this, enables us to maximise the grass-roots enthusiasm for recycling across the four boroughs."

"Fortunately the boroughs are strong on recycling already, however their efforts have to be supported with the necessary infrastructure to continue their good progress and Viridor is well placed to provide that support," Graham Warren added.

The practicalities of the contract are that all wastes and recyclables from the four boroughs will be delivered to one of two waste transfer stations at Beddington in Croydon and Villiers Road, Kingston.

The recyclables will be bulked for cost-efficient onward transfer to recyclers.  Valueless wastes that are left after the removal of the recyclables will be bulked for efficient transport to Viridor's landfill site at Beddington for safe disposal.
