Glasgow 'Successful Participant' confirmed

08 Dec 2011

FTSE 250 Pennon Group's Viridor today, (8th December), commented on the decision by Glasgow City Council's Executive Committee to confirm the company as 'Successful Participant' to develop and deliver a twenty-five year solution for the treatment and disposal of residual waste.

The firm which each year transforms over two million tonnes of materials into high quality recyclate, and yet more into 130 megawatts of renewable energy, will develop and deliver a 200,000 tonne, £150m MBT, AD and Gasification solution for the city's residual waste at Polmadie, Glasgow.

The project will move Glasgow from its traditional reliance on landfill, diverting 90% of municipal waste whilst driving enhanced recycling and achieving a net carbon saving of some 89,457 tonnes CO2e per annum. Financial close is expected in May 2012 before the commencement of work in April 2013 and an anticipated service commencement in December 2015.

Commenting, Mr. Colin Paterson, Viridor's Scottish Regional Director, said:

"As Scotland's leading recycling, renewable energy and sustainable waste partner, Viridor welcomes its appointment as 'Successful Participant' in this transformational project which is a key component of the 'Sustainable Glasgow' jigsaw.

"It marks another key milestone in our programme to translate Scottish zero waste policy into practice by investing up to £800m in vital infrastructure and comes on the back of our consent for a £200m energy from waste facility in East Lothian, the recent decision by South Lanarkshire to announce Viridor as 'Preferred Bidder' in their twenty-five year procurement and on our £10m investment at our Bargeddie advanced recycling hub.

"For over two years some of the UKs brightest recycling and waste managers, technical, legal and community benefit advisers have worked on a solution which will not only help move Glasgow towards a zero waste economy, but will deliver world class next generation green infrastructure whilst reducing council tax payer exposure to costly landfill levies.

"Importantly, the project is a vital boost for the construction sector and, as part of an ambitious community benefit clause, will deliver green jobs with growth opportunities, tenders for small business and social enterprises and an ambitious education programme across city schools.

"Our focus is to help Glasgow achieve its ambitions for the city and its people. We stand ready to work towards a financial close on the project and, as with councils across the UK, further drive sustainability and zero waste objectives for their communities."
