Pennon is reshaping its environmental legacy through green infrastructure, resilience and decarbonisation

03 Jul 2025

Pennon is reshaping its environmental legacy and is delivering measurable progress through investment in green infrastructure, operational decarbonisation and environmental resilience.

The company’s efforts have gained them international recognition as Pennon was recently named as one of Europe’s Climate Leaders 2025 by the Financial Times and Statista, placing 6th overall among 600 top-performing European businesses.

The annual ranking report recognises companies that have made progress towards climate targets, including verified Science Based Targets, reduced Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and been transparent about its Scope 3 emissions, which stem from its supply chains.

Pennon also recently achieved its highest-ever environmental ratings from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) - securing A- ratings in both Climate Change and Water Security, up from B- ratings in 2023. CDP’s scores are widely regarded as the global benchmark for environmental transparency, used by investors and stakeholders to assess corporate climate risk and resilience.

Susan Davy, CEO said: "We’re investing in more than just infrastructure — we’re investing in people, in nature, and in the future of the communities we serve. Recognition from CDP and the Financial Times shows the scale of the progress we’ve made, but it’s our teams on the ground turning those ambitions into action every single day. Whether it’s cutting emissions, restoring nature or delivering resilient networks, we’re focused on long-term impact — and we’re just getting started."

These achievements reflect the pace and impact of Pennon’s progress, showing its shift from ambition to delivery – and the company has not stopped there.

Working towards building a low-carbon future

Pennon is pushing forward with a clear roadmap to Net Zero operational emissions and has made major strides in cutting green-house gas emissions and driving renewable energy generation.

In the last year the company has achieved a 70% reduction in Scope 2 (GHG) emissions since 2021.

It is also on track of reaching 50% self-generation by 2030 through Pennon Power.

In addition, Pennon has already planted over 100,000 trees above its target of 250,000 trees to contribute biodiversity and natural carbon removal.

These actions reflect a significant evolution in Pennon’s approach and show they are not just meeting crucial regulatory requirements in their industry but leading with proactive, science-based environmental action.

The improvements Pennon has made have directly contributed to its enhanced CDP ratings, showing that its progress is both measurable and externally verified.

Whether they are cutting carbon emissions, restoring nature, or investing in future-proofed infrastructure, Pennon’s commitment is consistent and unwavering - to create better outcomes for communities, ecosystems, and future generations.
